I believe that all of us, including me, often forget the meaning of a simple word. I came across a Hadith and a verse of the Quran that mentions being humble. Wanting to refresh my memory of the true meaning of being humble I looked it up on a online dictionary. One definition caught my eye, "conscious of one's failings."
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "God has revealed to me that you must be humble, so that no one oppresses another and boasts over another."
Sunan of Abu-Dawood, Hadith 2294
"(O Prophet Muhammad) give good news to the humble, whose hearts tremble with awe at the mention of God, who endure adversity with patience, who establish regular prayer, and who spend in charity out of what we have given them."
The Holy Quran, 22:34-35
If we, as humans, remember all of our failings, and keep in remembrance the greatness and the complete perfection of our Creator, we would never have the horrible problem of pride.
We must remember that just as easy as Allah (swt) has given us health, riches, family, or any other thing that we have in our life, He can just as easily take it away. Despite what Allah (swt) has blessed us with, in the end of the day we are all the same- humans and sinners. Let us keep conscious of our failings and strive to be ever humble and submissive to Allah (swt). Let us knock down the barrier of pride so that we as Muslims can be unified and there for each other in the time of need.
